That way you can keep an eye on it and when 3 months are up, replace the trap. Then write in the new date, or put a sticky label over it. If you replace the trap carefully you can keep using the original box indefinitely.

How to replace the pheromone sticky trap without getting into a mucky mess

The title of the product is a clue as to what it might be like to handle: sticky. (No, you can't smell anything unless you're a male common clothes moth!). There's a bit around the edge that isn't sticky. And a single strip of regular stickiness that sticks the refill card to the inside of the box. Carefully grip the old sticky trap around the edges, and peel it away from the box. Admire all the dead moths stuck on it then chuck it in the bin. Then peel the backing paper off the new pheromone sticky trap card and carefully insert it into the box. The back is pretty sticky so if you just lay it into position it should stick without having to press it down or anything.

What if the pheromone sticky trap sticks to the front of the box by mistake?

This can happen as the trap is a sticky piece of kit. The main thing is not to panic. It will still work. There is just less of it for the moth to stick to. If you're very careful you can gently push it away from the front of the trap. I do recommend you wear gloves if you try this though.

Do all moths eat clothes?

No way! There are thousands of species of moth and only three of these eat woollen garments in the UK. Clothes moths are actually very useful out in the wild as they eat owl pellets, old nests and other things that would take a lot longer to biodegrade if the moth larvae didn’t help. The pheromone trap only attracts clothes moths, so it gives an indication of whether the moths you see in the home are in fact clothes moths or other species. If the trap isn't attracting them then they're not guilty. Just make sure you place the trap somewhere away from any moth deterrents you have in the home as this will give Mr Moth cognitive dissonance if he detects both together. He will scent the irresistible lure of a female moth wanting to mate, coupled with the revolting stink of lavender and be at a complete loss as to which direction to fly in.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0799/5260/9314/files/refill-pack-of-2-moth-pheromone-sticky-traps_1.jpg?v=1788255726
really-nice-beechwood-lambswool-duster
"Really Nice" Beechwood & Lambswool Duster

Quality and Sustainability

These lambswool dusters are made in the UK by Hillbrush, a company with a rich heritage and a commitment to superior materials and meticulous construction. During the production process, the mirabilite is washed out, leaving the remaining blend (70% cellulose & 30% cotton) extremely porous, which makes the sponge cloth extraordinarily absorbent. They can be used on their own with warm water or with your favourite household cleaner. Once you’ve used them, make sure you wring them out with water and leave them flat to dry. We did try to use them when washing up but we prefer our scourer pads or multipurpose cloths.

The great thing about these cloths is that they can be reused over and over. It reduces the volume of plastic waste that goes into landfill, reduces the amount of plastic that gets blown into the ocean en route to landfill sites, reduces plastic pollution, it conserves resources and reduces the amount of energy used producing items from virgin plastic (to name a few reasons!).

But once we recycle plastic, what do we do? Well, think about it. If we dutifully recycle our plastic but continue to use virgin plastics, then what’s the point of recycling it in the first place? If we don’t buy products made of recycled plastic the plastic we continue to recycle will soon pile up into more unwanted waste or get burned.

So instead, we should try and buy products made with recycled plastic to make all our dutiful recycling worth it! Plastic is a hardy, versatile material so can be repurposed from its original state into all sorts of other things when it's recycled. Doing this is called ‘closing the loop’ (the loop being the three arrows on the recycling logo) and helps to create a more circular economy with less waste. Our recycled aluminium foil uses the same principle! In simple terms they “make water wetter”, and make washing detergents much more efficient than regular soap. Detergents remove oils from clothes, and that includes the natural oils produced by your own skin. Among other functions, our natural oils are necessary for protection against microbes. Surfactants are the main agents that strip away oils. Residues in clothes can seriously irritate the skin and aggravate skin issues. Rashes are common when the skin comes in direct contact with detergents, and some sensitive individuals may break out after wearing clothes that have been washed with conventional surfactant-containing detergents. Exposure to these chemicals can also cause respiratory problems. Many standard detergents contain formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is used as a preservative to help prevent bacteria growth. It is a respiratory irritant that can cause chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing and nose and throat irritation. It has been linked to an increased risk of asthma and allergies in children and is also recognised as a human carcinogen. That shows you it is totally chlorine-free (TCF). The bleaching is purely for aesthetic reasons but is damaging to both animals and humans. Chlorine-bleached baking paper is warmed creating a nasty by-product called dioxin that has been linked with reproductive and developmental issues, damage of the defence system and with the interference of hormones. They are also only able to biodegrade anaerobically which means once they get washed down the drain into a sewage place or a river they do not biodegrade if oxygen isn’t present. This can mean some rather nasty chemicals are left in our waterways which can be harmful to wildlife.

Detergents can also contain other chemical ingredients such as phosphates, phosphonates and carboxylates. Simply pop the box together (it comes flat packed so it doesn't get squashed in the post), peel the cover off a single sticky strip down the back to hold it in place in the box, and peel the protective layer off the front of the sticky card. Carefully, holding onto the non-sticky corner, insert it into the box and you're ready to trap moths. You can slide the hanger piece through the top and hang it in a wardrobe, or hang it discreetly in a room, or even slide it under the sofa to attract moths that might be thinking of homing in on your wool rugs. Each trap will be detected within a space of around 70 cubic metres. This is equivalent to one generously proportioned room or two smallish ones. It's a good idea to have several traps distributed around the home. Remember, the moth trap will only kill the male moths, and it's the females laden with eggs that are going to drop a load somewhere where they can hatch into larvae and eat holes in your wool, silk, feathers and fur. The pheromone trap is part of a repertoire of products to manage moths in the home. There are three species of moth in the UK whose larvae eat material with keratin in (that is, wool, silk, fur, feathers). There are hundreds of different species of moth, and most of them are completely harmless. The Mottlock moth trap emits pheromones that only attract the clothes moth and the case-bearing moth so if you set the trap and you are catching moths then yes, there are clothes moths in your home. The other one to look out for is the pale-backed clothes moth - that responds to other pheromones so if it looks like there's a slightly larger moth munching your woollens then you'll probably need one of our Chimney Sheep traps that attracts the pale-backed clothes moth and the common clothes moth.

Be strategic

If you discover moths in the home it's tempting to purchase every anti-moth product you can find and try them all out at once. However this will confuse the moths as you are attracting them with one and repelling them with another. You need to be more cunning than that. The repellent products are better deployed once you have destroyed adult moths and their larvae. Then it is time to deter moths. Use the Mottlock Moth trap to kill the adult males. Use the Pistal professional insecticide with care on adult female moths and hatched larvae. This is made of an extract of chrysanthemums called pyrethrin, which is similar to the synthetic permethrins which are widely used in insect control. It is a natural product, is approved for organic use, and will become inactive after two to three days but while it is active it is lethal to all insects, even the beneficial ones, so this must be used with extreme caution.

Be thorough

OK so you're on a mission to de-moth your house, you think you've got all the adults, but what if some of them have managed to lay their eggs already? This is where the hard work comes in. You need to do a thorough clean, wash wool and silk items on a wool wash, get them dry-cleaned if necessary. Don't forget your sock drawer if you have pure wool socks and don't forget your undies if you have pure silk underwear. You can put things in the freezer if it's easier. If you have wool rugs then these need to be vacuumed and cleaned underneath (the larvae are clever little beasts and can sneak under the rug where a vacuum won't reach). Regular carpet shampoo products will not kill moth eggs so if the rug can handle the heat then steam clean it, if not then vacuum top and bottom. It is harvested by using a hooked knife and removing a thin layer of bark (about 6.4mm, or a quarter of an inch) in a downward half spiral of the tree trunk, allowing the latex to run down into a collecting cup. It takes a lot of skill to be able to tap correctly, but if done right, the tapping panel can yield latex for up to five hours. The farmers tap during the cool hours of the night or very early morning because when the temperature rises too much the latex will coagulate and seal the cut.

The rubber trees don’t need to be cut down to harvest latex, so rubber tapping is not damaging to the forests. Trees need to grow to be at least 6 years old and 6 inches in diameter before they’re ready to be tapped. Once they’re ready, they’re tapped about once every two days but are often rested, especially after a period of particularly heavy tapping. By doing this a tree can be useful for up to 20 years!

Natural rubber is seen as one of the world’s most essential raw materials and makes up about 30% of the total rubber used annually. It’s hard to say which is “better” when it comes to natural vs synthetic rubber, as both have different properties and are therefore better used in different applications, and both are probably more important than you might first realise (they’re used in medical devices, toys, aircraft and car tyres and all sorts of other things). But it’s easy to say which is better in terms of the environmental impact: natural rubber wins pretty easily. It’s sustainable and biodegradable, rubber trees absorb more carbon dioxide than even the tropical rainforest (because of their leaf density), and it lives a green life – throughout the harvesting, manufacturing, recycling and use.

Synthetic rubber, however, is not at all good for the environment and impacts it a significant amount. All kinds of synthetic rubber are made using petrochemicals such as petroleum and natural gas, using a process called vulcanisation (meaning to harden using sulphur at a high temperature, usually between 140-160°C).

During this process, a hydrocarbon mixture derived from petrochemicals is combined with natural gases to create different types of synthetic rubber. The production of synthetic rubber, like all things produced from non-renewable sources, contributes to our increasing GHG emissions and landfill pollution. So Pistal professional insecticide does what it says on the can: it kills the insects you want to destroy (clothes moths) and that's it. Other wildlife isn't harmed by the product, so long as it is used correctly.

When it comes to pest control there are two options available: DETER and DESTROY.

Doing this is called ‘closing the loop’ (the loop being the three arrows on the recycling logo) and helps to create a more circular economy with less waste. The Lavender Moth Protection is a gorgeously scented wardrobe hanger that will discourage moths from entering, but the Lavender Anti Moth spray is a way of protecting your most precious wool / silk / fur / feather items by treating each item individually.

How to use Anti Moth spray

Simply spray onto items you want to protect, including the underneath of carpets, the underside of jacket collars, your favourite taxidermied animal, the back of wall tapestries, inside musical instruments, etc. Moths lay their eggs in dark undisturbed locations. You have to be cunning and think like a moth to anticipate where to deploy this spray effectively. The front of a woollen wall hanging is exposed to the light, but that lovely dark space behind hanging against the wall would be a perfect place for the babies to hatch, especially if it's an old wall and a little bit damp. Likewise with wool rugs - think reverse side of rug or under the sofa - and remember old clothes stored in the loft or cellar.

The treatment remains repellent to moths for up to six months, after which it is recommended to re-spray everything.

Our Felted Wool Pad provides a cushioned underlay while you’re ironing, is naturally permeable to allow steam to pass through it, and has high thermal absorption, keeping hold of heat to help get rid of those creases faster. The heat retention makes ironing faster, easier and more enjoyable – a nice change from a painfully long chore!

Our Felted Wool Pad will make you feel like you have a brand new ironing board! These thin foam pads tend to come as standard on most ironing boards as they are cheaper to buy. Although they do a similar job, they aren’t as good. They wear down quicker and get flatter and flatter with each use. While they do bounce back when you’re not ironing, the more you use them, the more they will lose their shape. Foam is not permeable meaning steam cannot pass through it and the flatter it gets, the more likely it is that you will end up with water dripping from the bottom. A flat pad is more prone to move around when you’re trying to iron. All of this means that ironing will be more difficult and will take longer, and no one wants to make such a chore intentionally harder, right?

That’s not all, though.
